Fungal Infections
Fungi and bacteria live harmlessly inside the body and on the skin. However if an inbalance or increase of normally harmless bacteria and fungi occurs, this can cause the symptoms of a fungal infection of the skin.
The two main types of fungal skin infections are candidal infections (yeast infections) and ringworm. Sweat rash (candidal intertrigo), thrush (candida albicans) and oral thrush (oral candidiasis) are types of yeast infection whereas athlete’s foot (tinea pedis), jock itch (tinea cruris) and fungal nail infection (tinea unguium) are all types of ringworm.
Antifungal products containing clotrimazole (Canesten), miconazole (Daktarin), zinc undecenoate (Mycota), terbinafine (Lamisil AT) and tolnaftate (Scholl) are most effective against fungal skin infections.
